NEW GLOUCESTER — Howard Merritt Verrill, 83, of New Gloucester, passed away in the comfort of his home Friday, Feb. 23.

He was born in New Gloucester on March 4, 1934, to parents, Merritt and Angie Verrill. He graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1951. His wife of 59 years, Barbara Verrill, died in January 2013.

Howard is survived by his sister, Betty Robidoux; and his children, Angie Maschino (George), David Verrill (Susan), Nancy Verrill, Donald Verrill (Oksana), Jane Stone (Chuck), Ann Ryan (Robert), Mary Verrill, Peter Verrill (Beth), Catherine Verrill (Beth Piper); 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several in-laws that he welcomed into the family; and his canine companion, Sophie.

He was predeceased by his brother, Willis Verrill.

He served in the United States Army Reserve. He was a truck driver and a mechanic most of his working career. He also spent time volunteering with the New Gloucester Fire Department.

Howard’s interests were camping, Tuesday night suppers, family gatherings, hearing who we thought was his favorite, attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events, and being with all of the family dogs. He also enjoyed the Boston Red Sox, NASCAR, hunting and fishing.
