JAY — Jay Village Water District representatives were restoring water to much of Jay village Tuesday night, while still trying to locate a break along Route 4 that was discovered Sunday afternoon.

A boil-water order is still in effect.

Areas still without water include a section on Route 140 and Riley Village, including the Verso-Androscoggin Mill, according to a news release. All other areas were expected to get water back.

Workers are continuing to drill along Route 4 to try to locate the water that is leaking from the system when the valves are opened, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere posted on Facebook late Tuesday afternoon.

“The water appears to be traveling beneath the frost and not surfacing which is causing the difficulty in locating the break,” she wrote. “They have multiple outside experts working with them on this to try to locate the break.”

District representatives have been working nearly round-the-clock since 4 p.m.  Sunday. E.L. Vining & Son of Farmington dug up Route 4 near Riley Road on Tuesday morning to install a new valve to try to isolate the leak.

Normally, a water main break would push water to the road surface, but not this time, district Superintendent Mike Wells said Tuesday morning. He has been updating LaFreniere, who has been posting the information on the town’s Facebook page.

 The water district is a separate entity from the town.

Contractors fixed problems Tuesday on Hyde Road and at the water tower on Jay Hill off Route 4. Water was expected to be restored to the Hyde Road area shortly after the 4:25 p.m. update was posted. The tower was to be available once water is restored.

The district anticipates taking a water sample to the lab in Augusta on Wednesday and will likely receive results back on Friday, the statement said.
