Increasingly, President Donald Trump has been taking aim at Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller and his ongoing investigation.

Trump’s recent criticisms of the Department of Justice, the FBI and the intelligence community; his claim that the conclusions of the House Intelligence Committee (at least the Republican majority) makes it obvious no collusion has occurred and that should end the matter; his claims of a “witch hunt” and pursuit of what he calls “inappropriate” evidence; these and other publicly expressed opinions make it ever more clear that Mueller and his team will soon end up on Trump’s chopping block of firings and forced resignations.

Such a move would be a disaster of major proportions and a blow against the democratic system. There is nothing Trump could do that would be a more serious infringement of his powers than to fire Mueller or to see to it that the DOJ’s investigation is closed down.

That must be resisted. If there an unacceptable line the president can cross, that is it. I strongly urge elected representatives in the House and Senate to do everything in their power not to let that happen. The investigation must continue to its conclusion, whether that be the vindication of the president or some finding that shows serious violations of the law have occurred. Anything short of that would be a major cover-up and create a situation — together with similar consequences — as former President Richard Nixon’s so-called Saturday Night Massacre.
