MECHANIC FALLS — RSU 16 Adult Education announces several April and May learning opportunities.

Babysitter Certification: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19. For youth age 12 and up. Learn about developmental stages, safety, bottle-feeding, diaper-changing, and age appropriate activities. Includes AHA Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED. $75.

Chalk Painting: 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, April 9 and 23. Bring a small piece of wooden furniture to class and give it the vintage, cottage, antique or modern look. A supply list will be provided upon registration. $24.

Digital Photography – Framing Your Subject: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 24. Learn how to complement and highlight the subject for best composition. Weather permitting, much of the class will be spent outside. $12.

Environmental Toxins and Their Impact: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 7. How do the toxins in the world impact the risk of cancer? Maureen Higgins, Dempsey Center, will share information to help make more informed choices. Free, but registration in advance is required.

Geocaching: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2. What are geocaches and travel bugs? Find out more about the outdoor treasure hunting activity, and bring a device to set up an account on geocache.com. $12.

Poland’s Trails: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 8. Learn more about the hiking trail system being developed for recreation. Includes descriptions of the trails, the flora and fauna that can be found, a brief history and opportunities to join other volunteers in their work. $5.

Staying Home Alone: 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 19. Judy Emch, Red Cross trainer, uses games and activities to teach 8- to 11-year-olds the fundamentals of staying home alone for short periods of time. Students learn phone numbers, when to call 911, safe and unsafe activities and what to do in the event of an emergency. Includes take-home booklet and certificate of completion. $30.

Tips on Writing a Children’s Book: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 5. The class is for those who have a great idea for a children’s book but aren’t sure where to go with it. Learn strategies from author Tamra Wight on how to create interesting characters, map out solid plots and submit work. $12.
