JAY — Selectpersons unanimously approved a raise Monday for members of the Jay Police Department union following an executive session, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said Tuesday.

The union contract has a provision for a wage reopener in it. Union members requested a wage adjustment in February.

The board agreed to a one-time wage adjustment for the Police Department union equal to 1 percent of their total pay for 2017 to be paid prior to the end of the fiscal year on June 30, LaFreniere said.

The union has six members, including dispatcher and Office Manager Donna Ladd.

The combined total cost is about $3,200, LaFreniere said.

Police Chief Richard Caton IV is not a member of the union.

The Police Department had not received a wage increase in a previous year in which other units had, LaFreniere said.

Prior to the executive session Monday night, the board voted to put between 10 and 20 cords of wood out to bid. The hardwood was cut from town property in East Jay into about 4-foot pieces.

The Public Works Department cuts a section of wood on the sides of a road each year. In this case, the wood was cut to let more light in so the road will dry out faster, department Director John Johnson said.

LaFreniere said bid information will be put out once it is ready.

Bidders will be allowed to look at the pile and put in a bid for whatever they think the pile is worth, LaFreniere said.

The pile will be sold as is, where is, and must be picked up by the bidder. If they want to process the wood on site, they will have to provide insurance coverage, LaFreniere said.

The proceeds will go into the town’s Recreation Reserve Account.
