Wilton student earns scholarship

CASTINE — Midshipman Anthony Franchetti of Wilton, a junior at Maine Maritime Academy, has been awarded the Sea Dog Chapter Maine Maritime Alumni Association Scholarship Award, a $1,000 scholarship. 

Special Olympics scholarship to be given

FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Special Olympic Rene Fontaine Life Enhancement Scholarship will be presented on Friday, April 20, at the Farmington Recreation Center, 127 Middle St.

There will be a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is $5 a plate; extra donations will be welcome.

This is the first time the Rene Fontaine Scholarship will be given to a student in RSU 9 with intellectual disabilities to assist the individual to become more independent in whatever capacity they desire.

Wacky Wednesday at library

NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library Children’s Department is hosting science programs on the last Wednesday of the month during the school year.

The last two programs are from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 25 and May 20. The themes are rainbows, nonfictionator games and bubbles.

Historical society to hear talk on former slaves

OXFORD — The Oxford Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, followed by a presentation by Maine Historical Society Historian Candace Kanes, on “From Slavery to Maine,” at 6:30 p.m.

She will talk about some 300 or so former slaves who came to Maine following the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

The meeting will be held at the society, 73 Pleasant St., and the public is welcome. New members are welcome to join the society for $5 a year.
