WEST PARIS — James L. Young, 83, of West Paris, died early Tuesday morning, April 24, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born March 6, 1935, in West Paris, he was the son of Robert M. Young and Valerie (Houle) Young.

He attended school in West Paris and graduated from West Paris High School in 1953, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He married Joan Ellingwood on Jan. 1, 1954, and they celebrated 64 years of marriage.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the NRA. He enjoyed hunting trips with his family and spent many hours in his vegetable gardens.

James was an accomplished carpenter, working for Emery’s Building Materials in West Paris for many years. He later became partners with Wayne Ross and built many homes in the local community, including his family home, that he enjoyed living in for 50 years. He always cherished the two years that he spent logging with horses together with his father-in-law, Howard Ellingwood.

James is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan (Ellingwood) Young; and his five daughters, Jan and Rick Bradeen of West Paris, Patty Poland and Patrick Harrington of Fairfield, Karen and Clay Wilson of West Paris, Kathy Young and John Tichenor of West Paris, and Elizabeth and Lars Paulsen of Oslo, Norway. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Jason Bradeen of Portland, James Bradeen of Conway, N.H., Joseph Hakala of West Paris, Ashley Ernsberger of East Leroy, Mich., Katelyn and Kristina Wilson of West Paris, Sarah and Hannah Paulsen of Oslo, Norway, Melissa Howe of Buckfield, David Hemphill of Woodstock; as well as 10 great-grandchildren; his two beloved cats, Rusty and Penny; his brother, Paul Young, and his wife, Melissa, of Madison, N.H.; his sister, Laurel Bartlett, of Paris; his sister-in-law, Sonia Young, of Ipswich, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Robert M. Young and Valerie (Young) Costello; his brother, Bobby; his sisters, Polly and Alice; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Howard and Lois Ellingwood.
