I was pleased to read in the Sun Journal (April 22) that helmet usage was increasing in girls’ lacrosse.

In the 1990s, I skied 60 or more days a year, often going a whole year without falling — too cool or, rather, too stupid, to wear a helmet. In 1998, I fell on my first run on my 50th birthday. Helmet-less, I suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Moral of the story: Better to be safe than sorry (and it is not cool to incur a brain injury.)
