Auburn — Richard T. Ames, 86, passed away Saturday, May 5, in Auburn. He was born in Auburn on Dec. 18, 1931, the son of the late Thomas and Isabelle (Monachan) Ames. He was educated at Auburn schools and on Jan. 3, 1953, he married Donna May Kilby.
Rick was a U.S. Army veteran and, after his service to his country, went to work for the Maine State Highway Department and the Maine Turnpike Authority. After his career with the state of Maine, Rick established Ames Sport Shop in 1983, where he continued to work at until 2017.
He was a Master Mason and a member for 51 years. His early hobbies included coaching and umpiring baseball. He was also was a football referee. Rick enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, spending time at camp and hosting the family Christmas party.
He is survived by two sons: Scott and his wife, Carolyn, of Auburn, and Ron and his wife, Julie, of Poland; one daughter, Judy, and her husband, John, of Poland; five grandchildren: Jennifer, Kevin, Darcy, Sarah and Kristen; six great-grandchildren: Tristin, Gavin, Skyler, Alex, Ellie and Paige; and a sister, Reta Graham.
He was predeceased by his wife, Donna, and by his sisters Virginia and Martha.
