LEWISTON — It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Androscoggin Deputy Sheriff Dennis Philip Sampson. He died Saturday, May 5, at Central Maine Medical Center after a very sudden illness.

He was born in Lewiston on Oct. 5, 1966, the youngest son of Richard R. Sampson and Georgette Gobeil Sampson; Dennis grew up in Auburn. He earned his Eagle Scout in 1983 and lived the principles he learned in the Scouts his whole life.

He graduated from ELHS in 1985 and went into the Army Reserve soon after graduating. He served as a reserve police officer for the city of Auburn and as a full-time officer with the Paris Police Department upon graduating from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in 1991. Dennis has been serving in the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department since 2005.

On Oct. 25, 1991, Dennis married Celeste Perrier. Together they built their home in Poland, living there since 1995. They welcomed their son, Jeremy, into their family in 1998.

Dennis loved spending time with his family. He also loved the outdoors, often working with his Kabota cleaning and cutting trees to expand his outdoor living space. He was well-known for his kindness and compassion, sense of humor and quick wit. He was a committed community member who enjoyed serving others.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Celeste; their son, Jeremy; his mother, Georgette Sampson; his siblings Rick (Kathy), Ray (Sonya), Rob and partner, Mariane, and sister Ann; mother-in law, Joan Boutin Perrier; and brothers-in-law Steve, John and wife, Roxanne; and his nine nieces and nephews. Dennis comes from a large family and has many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Richard R. Sampson; an infant brother, Daniel Joseph; his father-in-law, Henry Perrier; and sister-in-law, Danielle Perrier. He will be greatly missed.
