AUBURN — A New Gloucester man was arrested Wednesday and charged with manslaughter in the death of an Anson motorcyclist on Court Street in 2017.

Steven Primavera, 34, was indicted earlier in the week by an Androscoggin County grand jury.

Primavera is charged in the Sept. 22 death of 54-year-old Reginald Clement, who was riding his motorcycle east on Court Street when he was struck by an oncoming car and killed.

Witnesses at the scene of the crash reported that the car, a Chrysler driven by Primavera, had drifted into the oncoming lane, causing Clement and another biker to swerve in an attempt to avoid a collision.

The two motorcycles crashed into each other, witnesses reported, and then the Chrysler plowed into the Harley-Davidson driven by Clement, knocking him into the street.

He died a short time later despite the efforts of a nurse who stopped at the scene to administer CPR. His wife, who had been riding alongside him, survived the wreck with minor injuries. Both had been wearing helmets.

Primavera was not hurt in the crash. A police accident report states that Primavera did not attempt to brake before colliding with the motorcycle.

The crash scene was reconstructed by police as part of an investigation into the fatal wreck.

Primavera was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail, booked, and later released on bail. The date of his initial court appearance was not immediately available.
