NORWAY — Danny M. Chouinard, 56, of Norway died unexpectedly Thursday, May 10, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

He was born Oct. 20, 1961, in Norway, the son of William and Ruth Chouinard of Oxford. He attended Oxford schools and graduated from Oxford Hills High School in Paris in 1980.

Dan joined the U.S. Army in 1980 and served in the continental U.S. and Hawaii, and in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1992. He worked for the USPS, Bates College History Department, D.R. Fournier Inc. of South Paris, Robinson Manufacturing Co. of Oxford and Dielectric Communications in Raymond. In 1995, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Korean studies from Bates College in Lewiston, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. He earned an associate degree in technology from Pierce College in Tacoma, Wash., and a master’s degree, with honors, from the American Military University in 2013. For the past 14 years he worked at the U.S. Department of Defense induction test center in Portland.

He was a member of Moss Brook Church in Paris, the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association in Portland, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Advent Christian Campground in Mechanic Falls.

Dan’s hobbies included studying and viewing trains, woodworking, riding motorcycles, playing guitar, fishing and Korean culture, particularly studying it, cooking Korean foods and keeping part of the culture close to him.

He is survived by his son, William S. Chouinard, and his wife, Chi Yi, both of Fairbanks, Ala.; his daughter, Michelle P. Becker, and her partner, Peter Haines, and their four children, Brayden Becker, Kobe Becker, Bailey Becker and Adrianna Haines, all of Traverse City, Mich.; his father and stepmother, William and Betty Chouinard of Oxford; two brothers and their wives, Edward and Mary Chouinard of Paris and Charles and Marie Chouinard of Green Acres, Fla., and Oxford; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, and aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by his mother, Ruth (Twitchell) Chouinard, and his nephew, Ai Chouinard.
