100 years ago, 1918
At 10:30 Saturday morning, practically every one of the hundreds of Red Cross Tag sellers was out of tags. They scurried about the streets, hunting down someone to give them even one or two tags to sell. They stormed the W. C. A. but all the time they were industriously collecting silver coins which, tags or no tags, found their inevitable way into the capacious mouth of the white red-crossed boxes. In the Journal print shop, presses were working furiously to keep up with the steady demand for tags and more tags.
50 years ago, 1968
The weatherman cooperated and so did the kids … hundreds of them. After a one-week postponement because of inclement weather, the Auburn Police Department held its much anticipated, by the youngsters at least, bicycle road-e-o. The road-e-o, held at several locations throughout the Shoe City, brought out youngsters of every size and description along the route.
25 years ago, 1993
Dee Dee Stearn’s kindergarten class at Washburn school in Auburn celebrated music during the month of May by asking parents and friends to share their musical talents with them. Alex Washington’s dad, Robert, impersonated Elvis Presley, winning the hearts of many in the audience. Washington will compete as an Elvis impersonator this summer in Memphis, Tenn.
