ANDOVER — On May 11, 2018, Bertrand E. Nickerson Jr., 57, of Andover passed from a car accident, to make his final home in heaven. He was the loving husband of Rebecca Simmons Nickerson, the father of Heather Henderson and grandfather to Micah, Logan and Atticus.

Bert was born May 9, 1961, to Bertrand and Sandra Nickerson, in Newport. He graduated from Nokomis High School in 1980, where he loved and participated in sports, soccer being his favorite. Four years later, his daughter Heather was born to him and his first wife, Betsy Parker.

His early years were spent working alongside his father at Hood, his brother, Scott, at the woolen mill and his brother, Eric, doing construction. He loved spending time with his family, including his younger sister, Lisa, and various aunts, uncles and cousins. There were many trips to Milbridge over the years with his parents and family. Hikes up Mount Katahdin and Borestone Mountain with his daughter and days in the boat out on Sebasticook Lake with family and friends. Crazy hunting trips and excursions to the middle of nowhere. So many good memories spent with those he loved.

Over the years, his life was filled with good times, but also, like many folks, some bad times as well. During a hard point in his life, he decided he needed to make some changes for his family and asked Jesus for direction in his life … and Jesus answered, bringing him the salvation and deliverance he needed.

From that point on Bert committed his life to ministering to his family, friends and anyone he came in contact with.

He received a great blessing when he met and married his sweet and kindhearted wife, Rebecca, in 1997, making Andover his new home.

Through his relationship with Jesus, he became a light and a pillar to many people, in his home, on the job site, and out in the community. He performed at the local sawmill, worked his passion for carpentry and became caretaker for The Merrill House in Andover, for which he proudly served for 12 years.

His love of people, especially children, shone brightly when he became principal of Black Mountain Apostolic Academy and Children’s Pastor at The Apostolic Church in Mexico.

Alongside these great works, one of his most passionate endeavors was teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, through an Alcohol and Chemical Treatment course, to inmates at a nearby federal prison. With much prayer and understanding, because of his own past, many lives were changed there.

His determination to live for Jesus never wavered, and two days before his death, as he celebrated his 57th birthday on May 9, he hollered through the house, “I’m 57, and going to heaven!” He was confident of his final destination. Oh, how he is rejoicing in Heaven now!

Bert is survived by his wife, Rebecca Simmons Nickerson, of Andover; his daughter, Heather Henderson, of Andover; and his three grandchildren, Micah, Logan and Atticus Henderson; his parents Bertrand E. Nickerson Sr. and wife, Sandra, of Newport; brother, Scott Nickerson Sr. and wife, Lisa, of Palmyra; brother, Eric Nickerson, and wife, Lettie, of Harmony; his sister, Lisa, of Newport; and many wonderful nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
