WATERFORD — Waterford Congregational Church is launching a new music series called “Sharps on the Flat” at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 10.

Two groups will be featured — Vocal Solution, an eight-member a cappella group founded and based in the Oxford Hills area, and OHUG, Oxford Hills Ukulele Group.

The concert will be held in the church at 15 Plummer Hill Road in Waterford Flat.

Mistress of ceremonies will be Jane Morse of Waterford.

Donations will be accepted for this fundraiser for the Sweden Food Pantry, which the Waterford Congregational Church supports and participates in. There will be one brief intermission and refreshments will be available.

Since January of 1997, Vocal Solutions has entertained audiences with their repertoire that ranges from traditional spirituals to contemporary/popular arrangements. The singers come from different professional and musical backgrounds, but all have in common the love of choral music.

Since its formation, Vocal Solution has performed at community events and church services in western and southern Maine, including Maine Music Society’s “Battle of the Blends,” Poland Spring Preservations Society’s summer concert series, and as guests of the Yarmouth-based Royal River Chorus and the Portland-based Downeasters Barbershop Chorus.

Members are Kristen Searles, Pam Merz, Karen Chapman, Jane Morse, Kevin Murphy, Brian Pfohl, Del Leonard and Carl Steidel.

OHUG was founded in 2014 by Jim and Pam Burke in the living room of their home in South Paris. Members taught themselves how to play the ukulele. When the group outgrew the Burke’s home, it rehearsed at local churches. The group now totals about 50 members, with attendance at biweekly meetings at around 20.

OHUG has performed in several venues, including local libraries, organizations, nursing homes and at the Belfast Ukulele Festival. Members come from the Oxford Hills and also from Bethel, Gray, Naples and beyond. They do a range of songs from a 1950s medley to a classical piece and a few audience participation songs.
