DEAR SUN SPOTS: Since you’re the one with all the answers, early last year an organization erected triangular, eight-foot columns at several locations along the River Walk in Auburn, then the big windstorm last fall blew many over. There were only two remaining – one at Bonney Park and one on the steps going down to the Riverwalk by Gritty’s. They were wonderful and had a lot of educational information about the river and city. I’m wondering if they will be put up again.
You’re the greatest. I read Sun Spots every day. — No name, Auburn
ANSWER: Thanks for all the compliments, but I really am just a curious person who likes to get to the bottom of things!
I asked Eric Cousens of Auburn’s Economic and Community Planning Office for this answer. The popular signs, created in partnership with a Bates College Environmental Studies Capstone Course, will be back in place this summer. They were returned to the Massachusetts installation contractor for repair and replacement because they weren’t anchored properly.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: When someone wins a TV game show, do they have to take the prize or can they have the equivalent in money? — No name, no town
ANSWER: It really does depend on whether the show actually bought the prize or the prize is being promoted/advertised by the show. Most often, you don’t have a choice whether you get the actual prize or “cash in lieu of.” It also takes up to 90 days to get your prizes.
This website, www.marketplace.org/2015/01/20/business/winner-reveals-inside-scoop-game-show-prizes, has really good information if you are considering being on a game show, including all the behind-the-scenes rules and tips.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: This past February, my third-grade students wrote letters to small-town newspapers around our country. The letters asked people in each state to send items of interest that the students might include in their final class State Fair project. My students were thrilled as packages started arriving from all over the country! They received books, newspapers, postcards, maps and many unique items from the wonderful and generous people of the United States of America.
This project could not have been the success that it was without YOU! I’ve had several parents indicate that their family would be taking a trip to the state that their child learned about this school year to see the beauty and unique qualities firsthand. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. — Mrs. Robinson, Langley School
DEAR SUN SPOTS: In regard to the question on where to order English Toffee (June 1 Sun Spots), The Vermont Country Store sells it. You can reach the store at 1-800-547-7849. The candies are soft and chewy and are made with cream and lots of butter so they melt in your mouth! My grandchildren love them! — No name, no town
