Temperatures elevated during the week, reinforced by three high readings of eighty-two degrees. There was a range of forty-six degrees, from the low of thirty-six on the 10th and 12th, to the high of those three highs of eighty-two. The approaching week is expected to have higher readings as the official summer begins.

Those numerous showers, starting with a thunder shower very early Thursday morning deposited a most beneficial nine-tenths of an inch of water at my place, lots of prayers were answered. Each of the following days vegetation and bloom responded with vigor.

With the beneficial soil moisture, I resumed my delayed plantings and got pumpkins, corn, carrots, etc. into the warm moist soil. Somehow, most of the previous plantings germinated well and emerged mostly healthy or vigorous. Soldier beans for baking purposes remains unplanted because the haying project has first priority.

About five hundred bales of hay were accounted for early in the week and four hundred at the end of the week. No hay acreage is cut as I write this column and won’t be until after the expected showers and wind on the 18th. Two fields yeilded more bales than expected. About 15 acres have been cut and harvested with forty-five acres left to harvest as the weather and time permits.

Two weeks ago Moose Hill Pond was eight inches below full pond level and lowered more previous to the limited rain deposit. I used some of it to help sustain my garden crops, which represented part of my income. The extended dry spell lowered the farm pond at least one foot. The pond is too distant to use it for irrigation purposes. If I were younger, I would invest in an irrigation system and the necessary piping.

New bloom observed recently include: syringia (mock orange) elderberry, dogwood, hairy vetch, bromegrass, bed straw, beach rose, tricendria or widow’s tears.

This period of time last year started out hot, with two readings of ninety one, one eighty nine and ended cool with the high reading of fifty nine and sixty nine.

It was a dry week except for rain on the 16th that deposited 0.32 of an inch of water.

Some people ask how much snow this area received this past winter, my records reveal 107.25 inches
