100 years ago, 1918

Sometimes the unexpected happens. It happened this morning when a circus not widely known in this part of the country arrived in Lewiston. Had it been Barnum’s or Ringling’s the people would have known what to expect. It required but a short time after the circus arrived in town for the early birds to understand it was anything but a little show. Any tent attraction which requires two cars to transport around the county is in the big town class. It is a big attraction.

50 years ago, 1968

The Auburn Community Band presented its first concert of the season on the grounds of Central School last evening. The program began at seven o’clock. On the podium was David Plummer of Auburn, a member of the Edward Little High School band for the past three years. The music presented covered a wide area from Broadway show tunes to numbers with a Brazilian beat. The concert was sponsored by the Auburn Recreation Department.

25 years ago, 1993

Lewiston Fire Department emergency vehicles are now coming to a full stop at red lights and stop signs, a departure from the former procedure of simply slowing down to check for oncoming traffic. The Auburn Fire Department and United Ambulance Service may also take the same steps within about a month. Formerly, the vehicles followed the guidelines set down by Maine state law, which dictates that emergency vehicles reduce speed at all intersections so as to negotiate a full stop if necessary. The new policy, effective June 27, is in accordance with recent recommendations by the National Fire Protection Association.
