100 years ago, 1918
Sixty-one students received diplomas at the Lewiston high school graduation exercises held in Lewiston city hall Friday afternoon. According to time honored custom they filed in thru the broad doorways between the rows of friends and parents to the stage. The simple white frocks of the girls and dark suits of the boys were agreeably appropriate in the patriotic setting of red, white and blue bunting which draped stage and balcony.
50 years ago, 1968
The Auburn School Department yesterday afternoon received official notification of approval of a grant of $32, 961 to establish an Education Service Center in Auburn. It was immediately announced that Charles W. Jordan, who has been principal of Webster Junior High School, will serve as director of the center.
25 years ago, 1993
City directories and newspapers that date to 1860, census records from 1790, Bates College sociology papers, maps, yearbooks, diaries, scrapbooks and photos … The Lewiston Public Library has a wealth of such historical information but little has ever been indexed. To improve access, LPL is developing a local history database. When the computerized index is completed, it apparently will be the only one of its kind in Maine.
