“STORIES OF THE Y.W.C.A. WORK IN FRANCE”: How American women are making life endurable for nurses and munition workers overseas.

50 Years Ago: 1968

Some Lewiston youngsters have organized their neighborhood carnival for the benefit of the fight against muscular dystrophy. Chairman Danny Pelletier is assisted by Mark, Denise and John Pelletier, Denise Bouffard, Cathy Menneally and Sue Lacroix in the imaginative undertaking. It will be held at 15 Franklin St., Lewiston, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 15. Attractions will include a spook house, refreshments, penny pitch, ring toss, sponge toss, bowling on the green. and a sale of books, games and records.

25 Years Ago: 1993

Maine temperatures simmered well above normal Sunday, but drier air eased the effects of what was a heat wave in some places and the practical equivalent elsewhere. “Oh, it’s not as bad today,” said meteorologist Mike Middlebrooke at the National Weather Service in Portland, where the temperature hit 91 degrees by mid-afternoon. However, a drop in humidity made for more comfortable conditions. It was the fifth day of 90-degree-plus temperatures in Maine’s largest city, matching a record set in 1944 and tied in 1948.
