AUBURN — Michael Haley, 75, of Auburn, formerly of South Paris passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Clover Manor. He was born in Norway on Feb.13, 1943, the son of Gerald and Jeanette Downing Haley. He graduated from Paris High School in 1961 and from the University of Maine at Orono with a master’s degree in physical education and a minor in history in 1967. Throughout high school and college he was a multisport athlete and received numerous recognitions. He married Carol G. Mawhinney in 1961.

Throughout his 42-year career, his commitment to education and athletics in the state of Maine has been shown through time spent as a teacher, a coach, a baseball umpire, a basketball official, a department head, an athletic director, and an assistant principal, often wearing multiple hats at the same time.

Mike was a Larry LaBrie award recipient, the Maine Principals’ Association football coach of the year award was named after him and he was a National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame recipient for his contribution to amateur football. He spent 23 years as the MPA Ice Hockey Tournament director and seven years on the Shriners Lobster Bowl executive committee. He served as the Maine Football Coaches Association executive secretary for 30 years. He is survived by his children, Rhonda, Michele and Michael Haley; his sisters, Donna Stacy and Suzanne Bouchard; grandchildren, Emily Mallis Damgali and Jack Mallis and Sam and Clare Haley; nephew, Matthew Stacy; niece, Denise Bouchard Turner.
