LEWISTON — Fiddler Greg Boardman will kick off the new “Oasis of Music” season with a performance this coming Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Trinity Church, 247 Bates St., beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Boardman will play a set of tunes he learned from the concerts and recorded performances of Dave Swarbrick (1940-2015), the English fiddler who lured him years ago away from rock guitar toward the charms of the folk violin. Swarbrick’s repertoire, “always played in a unique style full of personality and joie de vivre,” says Boardman, covered a vast territory of traditional English, Irish, Scottish and American tunes, from the elegant to the “crazy wild,” and included some of his own compositions. Best known for his work with the seminal folk-rock band Fairport Convention and his acoustic duo with Martin Carthy, Swarbrick led a very full and influential life of recording and concertizing, beginning in his teen years.

The “Oasis of Music” is a series of half-hour recitals every Wednesday from September to May at Trinity Church. Admission is always free, with donations gratefully accepted. The music styles performed are varied, from blues to classical, vocal and instrumental, featuring some of the finest musicians of the greater Lewiston-Auburn area.
