As a disabled veteran, I would really hate to see Brett Kavanaugh as a justice on the Supreme Court. If the nomination were to go through, I am worried about the decisions he would make about America’s health care system. He has criticized Chief Justice John Roberts for upholding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act.

He has also argued that a president could declare a law unconstitutional and refuse to enforce it “even if a court has held or would hold the statute constitutional.” That would give the executive branch sweeping new powers and usher in a new era of complete lack of accountability for the president, while diluting the checks and balances set in place to ensure that the federal government works.

I have had multiple heart attacks and open heart surgery. I know first hand how critical it is to have health care coverage. Kavanaugh has also indicated his intentions to cut or even destroy Medicaid or MaineCare as it is known here.

I hope Sen. Susan Collins rejects Kavanaugh’s nomination, for all the people in the state of Maine who have needed health care access to save their lives.
