Phyllis Briggs celebrates 93rd birthday

DIXFIELD — Phyllis M. Briggs celebrated her 93rd birthday with a family trip to Salem, Massachusetts.

Briggs, a daughter of Pearl L. and William M. Jordan, was born July 5, 1925. She married Dale Briggs in 1965.

Briggs has 10 children and has been blessed with a posterity of 33 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She enjoys reading, walking and visiting with friends and family.

Open Observatory Night planned

PARIS — Twitchell Observatory will hold its free monthly Open Observatory Night from approximately 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, on Hooper Ledge Road. If skies are not clear, the alternate date will be Saturday, Sept. 8.

Observatory volunteers will show visitors Jupiter, Saturn, just a sliver of the moon, plus many deep sky objects with telescopes. There will be no access to the observatory telescope right now as the observatory is being moved.

Look Good, Feel Better

NORWAY — Dealing with the variety of challenges of cancer treatment can be difficult. Losing one’s hair can feel like another one of those hurdles to overcome.

Look Good … Feel Better, an American Cancer Society program, will offers hands-on instruction and education by volunteer cosmetologists, a 12-step make-up guide and complimentary make-up kits, as well as tips on wigs, turbans, scarves and nail care.

Meet the Candidates Night

JAY — Meet the Candidates Night will be held from 6 to 9 p.m Monday, Sept. 10, at the VFW Hall at 64 Jewell St.

The event is sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary 3335 and Jay, Livermore, and Livermore Falls community members.

Candidates for the Maine House of Representatives Districts 74, 76, 113, 114 and 116; for the Maine Senate Districts 17 and 8; for the Governor of the State of Maine; for the U.S. House of Representatives; and for the U.S. Senate have been invited to speak.

Sept. 11 remembrance in Norway

NORWAY — All are welcome to join the members of the Legion, AMVETS and VFW auxiliaries and DUV to remember 9/11. Those attending should wear red, white and blue if possible and bring a flag to wave.

The remembrance will take place from 8:45 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, across from the Norway Legion.

Gardening As You Age program

FARMINGTON — The Mount Blue Area Garden Club invites the public to its September meeting to hear speaker Ellen Gibson on “Gardening As You Age.”

Gibson will discuss adaptations that can put to use this fall to avoid being sore after fall gardening.

The meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Farmington Falls Road. The social half-hour will be followed by the speaker at 1 p.m. Finger food and beverages will be supplied by hostesses Sarah Parr and Roxanne Worster.

The Mount Blue Area Gardening Club will have an exhibit with gardening questions at the Farmington Fair, Sept. 16 to 22.

Eagles to host Texas Hold’em 

RUMFORD — Fraternal Order of Eagles hosts Texas Hold’em poker tournaments on the second Thursday of each month.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. Games will start at 6 p.m. There will be a $50 buy-in with a $5 high hand as well as a 50/50 raffle. The kitchen will be open from 4 to 6 p.m.

FARMINGTON — The SeniorsPlus office will be open for scheduled appointments Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Walk-in hours are from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and will be held on the second Thursday of every month.

Staff will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns about services and resources for older adults and adults with disabilities and their families. These services are free and open to the public.

Kiwanis offers electronics recycling event

PARIS — The Kiwanis Club of Norway-Paris will collect old electronic devices for recycling from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School parking lot on Route 26. 

There is no disposal fee, but donations will be accepted for the club.

The club will collect televisions, monitors, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, stereos, cameras, speakers, microwaves, cellphones, typewriters and calculators.
