The greatest contributions to humankind have always come from the poorest among us. Jesus, Socrates, Mozart, Beethoven, Lincoln, Gandhi all came from among the poor.

If Jesus climbed down from his cross and asked Judge Brett Kavanaugh to uphold the Affordable Care Act — so Jesus could get a nurse to look at his hands and feet — would Judge Kavanaugh look up from his close study of the Constitution long enough to award Jesus with the “freedom” to live without health care?

Gandhi might ask Mitch McConnell, “What kind of freedom is that?”

Socrates might ask, “What’s the use of ‘the pursuit of happiness’ if we’re too sick to pursue anything?”

Would Shawn Moody look up from his business ledgers long enough to offer Mozart and Beethoven a $7,000 medical insurance premium, $50 co-pays and a $5,000 deductible?

If Abraham Lincoln got himself shot in the head, would Mary Mayhew send Lincoln’s wife the ambulance bill?

If Jesus stood in front of the state capitol steps, and asked Bruce Bickford to expand Medicaid, would Bickford say to Jesus, “Just because everyone wants a pony, that doesn’t mean they can get one”?

Would Paul LePage pop open the front door and scream, “Get off my front porch! Jesus! Get a job, ya lazy bum! Medicaid is welfare! For lazy people! Who ought to be working …”?

If Jesus lived among us today, he would need a miracle to heal the nail holes in his hands and feet.
