FRYEBURG — A pregnant woman from Denmark is in critical condition after the vehicle she was driving collided with another car on Bridgton Road on Saturday, according to Fryeburg police.
The 29-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was driving her 2005 Subaru Outback westbound with her three children, ages 3, 5 and 8, police said.
An eastbound 2004 Volvo, driven by a 56-year-old woman from Fryeburg, was turning into the westbound travel lane when the vehicles collided and rolled over, according to a news release.
The 29-year-old driver and her 8-year-old son were in critical condition and were taken to Maine Medical Center. The other two passengers were treated and released to the family, police said.
The driver of the Volvo was not injured, police said.
“Although still under investigation, we believe distracted driving is the cause of this crash,” Chief Joshua Potvin said in the release. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those injured and wish for them a speedy recovery.”
The road was closed for more than three hours while the scene was investigated.
Potvin added that certain details of this crash are still under investigation and criminal charges may be forthcoming.
Fryeburg police, fire and rescue, and LifeFlight helicopter responded to the crash at 9:30 a.m. near 640 Bridgton Road.
