100 Years Ago: 1918

The Dixfield village people very generously responded to the call for clothing for the Belgians, and Friday noon, several of the ladies of the Dixfield branch of the Red Cross were busily engaged in sorting and packing. Five large dry goods cases were filled to their utmost capacity, and stenciled to be sent to Newark, N.J. where they will be sorted, and repacked to be shipped to the commission for relief in Belgium.

50 Years Ago: 1968

David Eisenhower says he’s confident he and Julie Nixon will have a White House reception after their wedding “Mr. Humphrey’s in trouble,” David said Monday in his room at Amherst College, where he is majoring in political science. “If it had been a peaceful convention, it would have been a different race today.” David, who played in the White House when his grandfather was president, said he and the younger daughter of the man who was Dwight Eisenhower’s vice president want “a nice, quiet wedding and it will be relatively soon.”

25 Years Ago: 1993

James Pratt will be honored for 75 years of patriotic service when members of American Legion Post 31 meet Oct. 11 at the clubrooms, 420 Washington St. Pratt will receive special recognition from national headquarters for his 75 years of membership. He is a World War I veteran and a charter member of Post 31. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. following a supper at 6 pm. Preparations are under the charge of Frank Breton and the members of the Auxilliary 31. Arthur Beauchesne and Adjutant Stanley Brickell are in charge of the evening events. Either one may be contacted for meal reservations. Bill Rogers, Past National Commander will represent national headquarters in making the presentation to Pratt.
