LEWISTON — Earle “Bear” Towne, 83, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 29, in Lewiston.
Earle is survived by his wife, Margery “Honey” Towne, of East Andover; a brother, Roland Blood, and his wife, Judy, of Pittsfield, Mass.; a son, Richard Towne, of California; three stepchildren, Cheryl Ford, Joe Zwelesky and Gayle Zwelesky; and two grandchildren, Austin Towne and Kendra White.
Earle was born in March 1935 in Stanford, Conn. He graduated from UNH. Most of his life he worked in the construction industry as a talented carpenter.
In recent years, Earle was best-known for his volunteer work maintaining the Appalachian Trail and being a true Trail Angel. Earle enjoyed his work as a hiker hostel owner, shuttling hikers, cooking the best breakfasts and sharing stories with his hiker friends. He was a true legend on the AT and is mentioned in many books written about trail experiences.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Calvary Bible Church, 1063 South Main St., Andover, with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Earle’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Calvary Bible Church, MATC or ATC.
