The Rangeley Region Guides & Sportsman’s Association will hold its monthly
meeting on Thursday, October 18, at our clubhouse on Old Skiway Road in
Oquossoc.  Our potluck dinner will start at 5:30 PM. After a brief business
meeting, we will welcome Bob Mallard and Emily Bastian of Native Fish
Coalition (NFC) for a presentation on Maine’s State Heritage Fish waters.

Bob Mallard will begin by presenting on Maine’s State Heritage Fish lakes
and ponds, a national treasure which provide excellent fishing for wild
native Brook Trout.  These 578 legally-designated waters throughout the
state contain self-sustaining populations of Brook Trout or Arctic Charr
that have never been stocked or have not been stocked in at least 25 years.
Our beloved Mooselookmeguntic Lake is one of them, along with many other
lakes and ponds in the Rangeley Lakes Region.   Bob is a prolific writer and
author of several books, national NFC Vice Chair, Maine board member and
founding member of the organization, Publisher, Northeast Regional Editor
and a regular contributor for Fly Fish America magazine.

Emily Bastian, founding member and Chair of the Maine chapter of Native Fish
Coalition, will conclude with a summary of NFC’s State Heritage Fish
informational sign initiative, an ongoing volunteer effort co-sponsored by
SAM and MDIFW with the goal of posting signs on all the state’s legally
designated State Heritage Fish waters.  This initiative aims to help protect
these ecologically, economically, socially, and recreationally important
resource by trying to prevent the introduction of invasive fish species.
