MEXICO — Several members of the Mexico Fire Department visited Meroby Elementary School on Thursday as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Led by Lt. Jamee Theriault, firefighters Allison Freeman and Tim Haas joined her in a presentation to 11 pre-K students in Sarah Burnette’s room.

Wearing paper fire hats with their names on them, the 4-year-olds listened as Theriault began by showing them a fire alarm and then tested it.

“When you get home, tell mom and dad to test their fire alarms,” she said, adding youngsters should make sure their families have designated meeting places outside in case there is a house fire.

She also reminded youngsters to call 911 in an emergency and what an emergency really is.

“An emergency is not when your brother or sister is mad at you,” Theriault said.

Haas then dressed in his fire gear, and later shared that gear with students, who tried on his fire hat and tested his air pack.

Freeman surprised the class when she re-entered the room dressed as Sparky the Fire Dog. Several youngsters gave her a hug.

At one point, student Carter Abbott raised his hand and said proudly, “When I grow up, I’m going to be firefighter and a policeman and a doctor.”
