Adult ed to offer CDL training courses

PARIS — Oxford Hills/Nezinscot Adult Education has announced the return of CDL Class A Truck Driver Training. Potential students need to have a CDL permit and be able to pass a Department of Transportation drug screen and physical. The program costs $4,100 and is scheduled to begin this fall.

USMA birthday supper

LEWISTON — The USMC birthday ceremony is important to all Marines, as it is an annual renewal of each Marine’s commitment to the Corps. Central Maine Detachment 810 will hold its annual USMC birthday supper at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Marco’s, 12 Mollison Way.

Legion auxiliary hosting Paint Night

AUBURN — Alden M. Gayton American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary Unit 31 is hosting a Paint Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Post at 426 Washington St. North. $25 per person. Painting an autumn forest; no experience necessary.  Munchies, 50/50 raffle, and cash bar. All proceeds go toward helping local veterans.

River paddles scheduled in Paris

PARIS — The Paris Parks and Recreation Committee will host paddling excursions on the Little Androscoggin River from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14.

Kayers and canoeists are invited to enjoy an afternoon of exploring the Little Androscoggin. Kayaks will be available for those who do not have one.

The town leases the Paris Utility District property at 1 Paris Hill. People are invited to not only access the river, but bring a picnic or walk the property and photograph the abundant wildlife.

Legion seeks students for scholarship contest

WINSLOW — High School students, grades nine through 12 of public high schools, private schools, parochial schools, military school and home-schooled are invited to compete in the 2018-2019 American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest.

The usual procedure is for contestant to compete in a local post contest, progress to a district contest, and the winner of each district advances to the state finals. The department winner will represent Maine in the national contest in Indianapolis from April 5 to 7, 2019, with the national organiztion funding round-trip tickets and lodging for both the contestant and a chaperone over 21 years of age.

The district contest will be held at Post 150, Mechanic Falls, in January. FMI: contact a nearby American Legion Post or Jesse Pierce at 207-336-3601.
