100 years ago: 1918
Pvt. Fred G. Soucy, Co E., 16th Infantry of the American Expedition, was among officers and soldiers who were awarded the Distinguished Service Crosses for their acts of extraordinary heroism. Pvt. Soucy won his cross south of Soissons, France on July 18, 1918, when his platoon was held up by a machine gun. He with two other privates, who were killed before reaching the emplacement, charged the gun and killed the crew of five Germans and captured their guns. Pvt. Soucy is the son of Mrs. Maggie Marquis of 43 Lincoln St., Lewiston.

The Lewiston-Auburn Business and Professional Women met Thursday evening at the Casco Bank meeting room in Auburn and enjoyed a most delightful skit, entitled “How Not to Run a Meeting.”
Mrs. Estelle Baird, local member chairman, conducted the program aided by Miss Ruth Smalley, Miss Linda Casson, Mrs. Clarice Tapley and Mrs. Ethna Turner. Prizes were awarded to Miss Alice Sanborn and Miss G. Edris Turgeon.

Five Lewiston/Auburn area schools will participate in a unique program of workshops and theater performances of the children’s classic, “The Secret Garden” thanks to a collaboration of grants from three Maine foundations and Actors Theatre of Maine. A ToM’s original production of the Francis Hodgson Burnett novel “The Secret Garden” has toured New England with more than 125 performances through a unique cooperation of funding from the Maine Arts Commission Council, The Maine Communications Foundation, and The Maine Humanities Council. Students in a total of 10 Maine schools will take part in the performances free of cost, and also participate in classroom workshops led by Maine humanities scholars.
