Karl Holmes Smith

1933 – 2018

HEBRON – Karl Holmes Smith, 85, died Monday Oct. 15, 2018 at his residence in Hebron, Maine.
He was born in Buckfield, Maine on March 13, 1933 the son of Ralph H. and Lillian Flora (Holmes) Smith. Karl graduated from Buckfield High School and the University of Maine at Orono class of 1960 with his degree in Engineering Physics and 5th year Pulp and Paper and was on the Dean’s List. He served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955. He was a Process Engineer when he retired from Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Rumford after more than 30 years.
Karl was a member of the Rumford Center United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Rumford Lodge of ELKS and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a Saxophone and Clarinet player with the Mahoosuc Band.
He was married in Rumford Center, Maine, on Dec. 22, 1957, to Fay Arlene Bartlett who survives of Hebron. Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Smith-Baker and husband Denis Baker of Weld and Elizabeth Smith and husband Peter Joyce of Reno Nevada; a son Darrell Smith and Fiancée Kim Stowell of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandchildren Bartlett Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada and Lena Smith New York City, N.Y.; a sister Ruth Ann Little of Kernersville, N.C.; two brothers, Lee Smith of Buckfield and Bruce Smith of Sparks, Nevada; sister-in-law Carlene Shepley and husband Barton of Mechanic Falls. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers Ronald and Ivan and two sisters Marie Downing and Janice Hanson.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Sunday October 21, 2018 at the MEADER & SON FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND MONUMENT SERVICES 3 Franklin St., P. O. Box 537, Rumford, Maine, with Pastor Robin Chaput officiating. Interment will be in the Buckfield Village cemetery in Buckfield, ME. Friends and family are invited to call at the funeral home after 1 PM on Sunday prior to the funeral.
