Phyllis Benoit, right, and her mother, Rita Benoit, finish picking apples at Stukas Orchards in Lewiston on Monday. The Benoits picked Cortland apples for the apple sauce and pies that they plan to make. Farm owner Richard Stukas said that this has been the best apple crop that he can remember. He said that he can not pick one reason why the size, color and quality of this year’s apples is so good. “It must be the luck of the draw,” said Stukas, the third generation of the Stukas family to own the orchards. The business has been in his family since 1933. (Daryn Slover/Sun Journal)
