Lions Club Texas hold’em Tourney

HARRISON — The Harrison Lions Club will hold a Texas hold’em Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the VFW Hall on Waterford Road.

There will be a $55 entry fee. Doors open at noon with starting time at 1 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available. The proceeds will be used to help support local programs such as senior dinners, Christmas for kids and scholarships.

Society to celebrate Veterans Day

RUMFORD — The Rumford Historical Society has planned events for November. In lieu of a members’ meeting in November, the board is encouraging all members and guests to attend the Canton celebration of Veterans Day from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.

The program will be presented by Doug Culver, who will give an interactive talk on WWII, using artifacts to help tell the story. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. If unable to attend Culver’s talk, the board recommends seeing the Museum exhibit from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Members wishing to help make decorations for the Society’s entry in the Festival of Trees beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, must call Gail Parent at 207-364-7482. Mrs. Parent will host the work session at her home in Hanover. Lunch will be provided.

Drop-in tai chi class starting

BETHEL — A free drop-in tai chi class, with a focus on arthritis and falls prevention, Tai Chi For Health, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, from Nov. 13-Jan. 17. There is no class holiday weeks.

The class will be taught by certified instructors Karen Reilly and Jacquelyn Cressy at Gould Academy Bigham Gym on Church Street.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese form of exercise practiced around the world for its health benefits. The movements are slow and controlled. The forms are designed to improve flexibility and balance; enhance relaxation; increase strength and flexibility; develop better breathing; and improve overall health.

Heritage society monthly meeting

WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Finnish Heritage Center on Maple Street.

A short business meeting will be followed by a program featuring a presentation by Tamara Cohen on Physical Activity and Sport in Finland.

This event is open to the public and coffee will be available.

Temple Historical Society monthly meeting

TEMPLE — The Temple Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the Town Hall. This will be the last meeting of the year; meetings will resume in April on the third Monday of the month.

Meetings are open to the public. The Historical Society 2019 calendar is still available and may be purchased at the Town Office or by contacting a Society member.

Church sets Thanksgiving service

MADRID — The Rev. David W. Smith, pastor of the Wilton Congregational Church, will lead Reeds Mill Church in worship at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22.

This one-room church at 995 Reeds Mill Road remains as it was when built: no electricity or running water but with original kerosene lamps and a wood stove. This service has become an annual tradition for many families.

Veterans Day brunch, recruitment

VFW Veterans Day ceremony

MEXICO — The Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Mountain Valley Middle School. The change in time for the ceremony will support those who attend church services.

The master of ceremonies will be Edward J. Roach Jr., with Chaplain Tricia Thurston. The main speaker will be David Williams, National VFW representative, and Charlie Green, Dixfield American Legion commander, will also speak. RAAPA will perform patriotic songs. Mountain Valley High School Music Director Michael M. Prescott will lead a musical program with his students, and the local Girl Scouts will also have a program.

All veterans are welcome to join in the march alongside the Scouts as they are led to their seats in the lecture hall. Upon conclusion of the ceremony, American Legion Post 24 in Rumford will host a spaghetti dinner.

Society to meet, have potluck

MEXICO — The Mexico Historical Society will meet and have a potluck supper at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in the Calvin Lyons Hall. In honor of Veterans Day the guest will be U.S. Navy veteran Roland Bousquet.
