Roughly 5 gallons of Number 6 fuel oil dribbled out at the Auburn Exit 12 turnpike ramp from a tanker truck en route to a pulp plant in Jay, said Auburn Police officer Timothy Morrell. Though the oil was cleaned up promptly by firefighters and presented no environmental or health problems. Morrell said the oil was much like tar and was very very slick, and did present a hazard to drivers. When the fuel was loaded in South Portland. a rubber gasket was improperly seated, causing the tank to leak periodically and at abrupt stops and starts. Wade Blanchard, a driver for the Virginia-based Superiors Carriers, was not fined or summoned, said Morrell. The incident was reported to police by a driver behind the truck with a cellular phone.
