Bertha Y. Gravel
1915 – 2018
LEWISTON – Bertha Y. Gravel, 103, a longtime former resident of 10 Oak Park, Lewiston, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, at the d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston with her family at her side.
Born in Saint-Marcel, P.Q., Canada on Sept. 22, 1915, she was the daughter of Joseph and Helene Tremblay Caron. Her family moved to Maine when she was four, and she was educated in Brunswick schools, moving to Lewiston in 1933. On June 8, 1935, she married the love of her life, Joseph F. Gravel. Mr. Gravel passed away in 1975. She worked for many years at the Continental Mill until it closed. A devoted Catholic, she was a lifelong member of Ss. Peter & Paul Basilica. She was active in her parish, belonging to the Dames de Sainte Anne and volunteering at church fairs and bean suppers. Bertha loved to travel, and was especially happy to have visited the Holy Land.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcelle Labbe and Joanne Beaudoin, both of Lewiston, four grandchildren; Mary J. Cyr and life-partner Jeff Venable, Daniel and wife Dee Beaudoin, David Beaudoin, and James and wife Danielle Beaudoin, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, three brothers, and three grandchildren.
Her daughters would like to thank the staffs of Beacon Hospice and d’Youville Pavilion, 4 West, for the loving care they gave Bertha. Visitation will be held at the Albert & Burpee Funeral Home on Wednesday, 9-10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in the Lower Church of the Ss. Peter & Paul Basilica, 11 a.m. Interment, St. Peter’s Cemetery. Donations, condolences, and a video tribute may be found online at albert-burpee.com.
