At the Dewitt hotel every Sunday evening, a program of excellent music has been held from 6 to 8 o’clock, the hours of the Sunday night supper. The Dewitt has made the Sunday night musical suppers famous in the area.

50 years ago: 1968

An official of the Auburn Housing Authority today announced that veterans and wives of veterans will get preference in applying for quarters in the Lake Auburn Towne House — housing for the elderly. AMA Executive Director Harry W. Woodard pointed out that government regulation, where housing for the elderly is concerned, provide that veterans, and widows of veterans, be given preference in the allocation of quarters. This, apparently, is standard but little-publicized regulations. According to Woodard, any veteran or veterans’ widow must document his or her claim when filing the application.

25 years ago: 1993

Good Shepherd Food Bank, this year handed out more than 130 turkey baskets to needy families for Thanksgiving, according to JoAnn Pike, the agency’s executive director. But handing out baskets is only a small part of the work they do. Their main objective is as a clearinghouse for all the soup kitchens and shelters in the state. Pike said workers have been busy shipping food off for the holiday rush. These soup kitchens and shelters that depend on Good Shepherd are also looking for more supplies. Thanksgiving and Christmas are different for the food bank, which hands out food to clients and soup kitchens all year. It takes a little extra so those in need can have a normal holiday, Pike said. “For me to go home and enjoy my Thanksgiving dinner I need to know people are eating more than beans for dinner,” she said.
