Gail Ann Santerre
1950 – 2018
GARDINER – Gail Ann Santerre of Gardiner, Maine, passed away on Nov. 25, 2018, at
MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.She was born in Gardiner on July 23, 1950, the daughter of Rosario J. and Iva M. Santerre. Gail attended schools in Gardiner, graduating from Gardiner Area High School in 1968. From there, she attended the University of Maine, Orono, receiving her BS degree in 1972.
In the fall of the same year, Gail became a physical education teacher at Webster Middle School and then into the new Auburn Middle School. Her tenure lasted for 31 years. She also was the girl’s high school swim coach for several seasons. Through all her years of teaching, she was a field hockey referee throughout the state of Maine. Having been diagnosed with MS, she retired in 2004.
Gail was also a swim instructor with the Gardiner Recreation Program for several years. Countless boys and girls in the Gardiner area learned to swim and enjoy the water as Gail’s students.
As busy as Gail was, she always loved being at the family camp on Tacoma Lake each summer. She loved boating, waterskiing and gatherings with friends.
Gail leaves behind her father, Rosario; her sister, Sandra and husband Peter Prescott; her niece, Stacy Prescott and husband Michael Zerangue; her nephew, Steven Prescott and wife Tracey and their children, Peter and Patrick Prescott, Tyler, Tanner, Tucker and Talia Nussinow. She was predeceased by her mother, Iva.
She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.
The family expresses their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the caregivers that served Gail in her home for the past few years as well as the attentive staff at MaineGeneral Hospital her last four days of life.
Join us for a celebration of Gail’s life at the Senator Inn, Augusta, on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 6-8 p.m.
Arrangements are in the care of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick, Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
