How can you tell
By Mark Melnicove
How can you tell if you are a bluesy bird disguised
as a human, or a human disguised as that bird?
And if you are a human, you might be a ghost
without name or occupation.
But suppose you are for now that bird, one who croons
to be that human dancing on earth.
You will dream to twist from the waist, lift kicks,
and spin to music without falling,
only to watch after the last number
as those ghosts of humans, lighter now,
look up at you in the treetop riffing, slip
on feathers, and soar.
