GRAY — At least two schools were locked down Thursday afternoon as police searched for a burglary suspect who reportedly fled on foot after a vehicle stop.
As police searched for the suspect shortly after noon, Gray-New Gloucester High and Middle schools, both on Libby Hill Road, were ordered locked down as a precaution, police said.
The suspect was later arrested without incident.
The initial traffic stop was made near the high school.
Police said Nickolas J. Mains, 40, Casco fled from them when they tried to stop him in connection with home and vehicle burglaries in Casco. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said Mains is also wanted on a warrant charging domestic assault.
After searching the area near the schools, police said, they determined that Mains had left the area. School lockdowns were lifted, although police maintained a presence in the area later Thursday.
At about 3:45 p.m., sheriff’s officials announced that Mains had been found and taken into custody.
