WILTON — “This is the earliest we’ve ever had the rink open,” said Frank Donald, recreation director. “Twice we’ve opened on Dec. 19. This year we opened on Dec. 9.”

The fire department helped with the opening process, he said. More the 14,000 gallons of water was brought in to flood the rink.

The rink is located in Kineowatha Park off High Street. There is no fee to use the rink. For those without ice skates, there are plenty available in the newly opened warming shack.

“The highlight of the rec department right now is the new building,” Donald said. “There has been a lot of feedback and people are excited about it.”

The warming shack also serves at the director’s winter office. There are two restrooms for park patrons, as well.

The shack is open Monday through Thursday 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Friday 3:30 to 6 p.m.; and weekends noon to 6 p.m. During school vacation, the shack will be open by noon everyday except Christmas, Dec. 25.
