100 years ago: 1918

When the Burnham & Morrill canning factory in Minot was taken down, and the large part of it moved away, a short time since the superintendent John Cuskley. who saw the business thus come to an end, also saw its start nearly half a century ago, for he was the only manager the factory ever had. Mr. Cuskley first assumed. the position 45 years ago when the factory was started. The corn shop had its beginning in a farmers union. composed of residents of Minot and adjoining towns. The cans were made at the home of R.T. Frank. A few years later Burnham & Morrill purchased the building and operated it until a year or two ago.

50 years ago: 1968

President-elect Nixon is buying not one but two houses at Key Biscayne, Fla., a spokesman said today. Press assistant Ronald L. Zeigler announced also that Nixon is selling his New York apartment at 810 Fifth Ave. Nixon already has purchased the three-bedroom Key Biscayne home of Emanuel Arca. Zeigler announced that the President-elect also will buy the house next door, that of Sen. George Smathers. Nixon has been renting the Smathers’ house and plans to spend his Christmas holidays there. Zeigler said the side-by-side houses on Biscayne Bay will be remodeled, with one to serve as an office and the other as a residence for the President-elect during Florida visits.

25 years ago: 1993

A New Year’s Eve dance will be held at the Jacques Cartier Club on Route 132, complete with noisemakers and hats. The band Sandstorm will play Top 40s and some rock ‘n roll from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Refreshments will be served at midnight. Tickets are now available at $10 per person.
