100 years ago: 1919

Mr. and Mrs. McLean of Rumford were notified last month by the War Department that their son, John W. McLean, had died on Oct. 16. Today they received a letter from their son, dated Dec. 4, saying that he was in a base hospital recovering from wounds and expected to start for home within a short time. Mr. McLean was wounded in July by a bullet in his right arm.

50 years ago: 1969

The first of the inspections of properties in the Goff Hill improvement area will get underway Monday with inspectors starting in the area of Fern Street and Western View. Richard Cahil, supervisor of the program, said the inspections are aimed at determining if properties in the project area meet the housing standards established by the city ordinance, state statute code, and federal regulations. Conducting the inspection will be Ralph Emery, supervisor of inspection services.

25 years ago: 1994

Laurie Lewis of Auburn, an employee of Geiger Bros., Lewiston. recently won a transmobile cellular telephone from United States Cellular. Her name was drawn Dec. 11 in conjunction with the Holiday Food Drive for Hope Haven held at the Auburn Mall. “We believe in supporting community organizations such as Hope Haven, which has helped hundreds of needy families In the Lewiston-Auburn area,” said the United States Cellular sales manager, Edward Spencer.
