100 years ago: 1919

The joint committee was named to investigate and report as to the advisability of purchasing the Blaine Mansion to be used as an executive mansion for the state. It consists of Gannett, Kennebec; Emerson, Aroostook, all from the Senate; Maher of Augusta; Eaton, Rumford, and Berry of Waterville from the House.

50 years ago: 1969

Ushering at the ball being sponsored by the Women’s Association of the Martindale Country Club tonight at the Hasty Memorial Armory in Auburn are Debbie Murphy, Donna LaFlamme, Kathy Longley, Janie Gagnier, Sue Carrier, and Elaine Cote. Mrs. Daniel R. Shields is general chairman of the event.

25 years ago: 1994

Steve Phillips, a seventh-grade student at Auburn Middle School, was the school’s winner in the first-round competition of the annual National Geography Bee. He is one step closer to winning a $25,000 college scholarship. The scholarship, sponsored by the National Geographic World, the society’s magazine for children,  is open to students in the fourth through eighth grades. The kickoff for this year’s bee was the week of Dec. 13 with more than 45,000 schools around the United States, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories participating.
