LEWISTON – Lillayne (Briggs) Read passed away at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at the young age of 90. She was born on May 8, 1928, to Bernard and Gertrude Briggs and raised along with her siblings in Auburn.

“Laney” graduated from Edward Little High School with the class of 1946. After graduation she became a switch board operator for the telephone company both in Lewiston, Maine and Texas.

On Oct. 3, 1953, she married Stanley K. Read. They had three children and Laney loved being a full time wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Besides experimenting with new recipes for dinner she was also an accomplished seamstress sewing everything from ball gowns to draperies. During the 1960’s she assisted at a Kindergarten and later ran a Girl Scout Brownie Troop. She was involved with the Ladies’ Hospital Auxiliaries and coordinated Sunday School teachers and women’s groups at the churches that they had attended. Stanley and Laney would always be out on the dance floor if there was music playing. They had been married for 57 years when Stanley passed away on Nov. 9, 2010.

Laney is survived by her daughter, Donna Marie Harrington of Turner, her sons, Ralph Stephen Read of New York and Timothy Lee Read of both Maine and California. She also leaves behind her granddaughters, Amanda, Patricia, Cristal and Rachel and their families as well as her step grandchildren and their families; her brother William Briggs and his wife Jean of Massachusettes; and Laney’s nieces, nephews and their families. Along with Stanley and her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Alberta Pratt and her husband Gerald and her other sister Laura Goss and her son Kerry Small.

The family is very grateful for the loving care that the staff on 4 West at d’Youville Pavilion gave Laney over the past four years.
