Dorothy Newton Shaw

AUBURN – It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our Mother and Grammy just days after her 90th birthday.She passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019, with her loving family by her side.Born in Brookline, Mass., on Feb. 12, 1929, to parents Jewett Beach Newton and Dorothy Barnes Newton. She moved to Hallowell, Maine, at the age of three months and attended elementary school in Hallowell through sixth grade. She attended Concord Academy in Concord, Mass., and then onto House in the Pines; a private school in Norton, Mass. She graduated from Colby Sawyer College in New London, N.H. which was a two-year college. From college; she attended Central Maine General School of Nursing for three years, graduating in 1955 with her R.N. degree and worked at this hospital after graduation until her retirement in 1984. After her retirement, she as a worked private duty R.N., as well as caring for family members.She married Warren Spaulding Shaw, Jr. on Sept. 24, 1955. Mum and Dad lived in Lewiston raising their three children and spending summers up at the family camp on Bear Pond in North Turner, Maine. Hobbies included knitting, reading, and enjoying her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Lewiston, serving on many committees and boards. Mum was actively involved with the CMG Class of Nursing 1955 Reunion Committee. She loved her garden of roses. She was an avid animal lover. She loved to go shopping and out to eat. Mum had a great sense of humor, and a wonderful sense of adventure, which included motorcycling and a bungee jump in New Zealand at age 65. Traveled extensively through the states, Bermuda, Canada, Europe, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. Most of all, she loved her family. She ensured that her family always celebrated any holidays or family birthdays together.The family would like to thank the staff at Clover Manor for the care, love and support they gave Mum and our family.She is survived by daughter Anne, husband, Bernie and granddaughter, Rebecca McAllister of Lewiston and daughter, Dorry Shaw of Brunswick, and son Warren, wife Amy, grandson Bennett, and granddaughter Sofiya of Hartford, and her dog, Brindy, as well as many nieces & nephews.She was predeceased by her husband, Spaulding, her parents, and her three sisters, Alice Sampson and husband, Dick, Sylvia Cotton and husband John, and Anne Truesdale and husband Elmer.Visiting Hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019, at Fortin/Auburn, 217 Turner St., Auburn, Maine. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 at Fortin/Auburn. A social will follow. Condolences can be shared at www.thefortingroupauburn.com.
