LEWISTON — A firefighter and former fire inspector has denied that he engaged a prostitute.

Anthony Peter Morrell, 54, of 21 Cleaves St., Auburn, entered a not guilty plea in a letter filed in 8th District Court by his attorney, Edward Rabasco.

Morrell had been scheduled for arraignment in 8th District Court on Wednesday. He is free on $150 unsecured bail. The Class E crime is punishable by up to six months in jail and a maximum fine of $1,000.

According to a complaint filed Tuesday by prosecutors, Morrell paid for sex on Jan. 3.

This isn’t the first time Morrell has been charged criminally. In 2012, he was arrested and charged with possession of crack cocaine.

For several years, Morrell served as one of Lewiston Fire Department’s fire inspectors. He was dismissed from that position, but later rehired as a firefighter.
