NORWAY — A house fire at 544 Crockett Ridge Road that caused major damage Tuesday night was accidental, according to Fire Chief Dennis Yates.

Yates said the fire started while the homeowner, Tina Levesque, was cooking in the kitchen of the one-story, single-family home. She suffered minor hand injuries while attempting to throw a piece of kitchen equipment outside, he said.

Levesque’s son, Trenton, notified officials of the fire. He, his mother and two girls who also lived there escaped the house unharmed, the chief said.

Yates said the fire was contained to the kitchen and caused about $25,000 to $30,000 damage from smoke and heat. Yates said the house is uninhabitable but could be repaired, and he believed it was insured.

Yates said the Norway Fire Department worked quickly and efficiently in the cold and howling winds to put out the flames.

He said Levesque re-entered the house after the fire started and attempted to put out the flames.

The chief said he understood the inclination to protect a home or pets, but he strongly urged people not to do so.

“People can die,” he said. “I’ve seen it in my 45 years. Don’t go after your purse or pets.”
