MEXICO — A local man was freed on personal recognizance bail Monday, three days after his arrest on one charge each of felony gross sexual assault and felony unlawful sexual contact with a child.

Ralph Santillo, 60, owner of Ralph’s Driving School in Mexico, was arrested Friday by the Mexico Police Department on the two charges.

The charges stem from incidents in Mexico in 2013 involving a child under the age of 12, according to a police complaint.

Santillo was released on personal recognizance under a contract with Maine Pretrial Services. Conditions of his release include no contact with the child and no contact with children 18 years old or younger.

Gross sexual assault is a Class A crime punishable by up to 30 years in prison, and unlawful sexual contact is a Class B crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Santillo was a substitute teacher with Regional School Unit 10 and has no previous criminal history, according to sources.

RSU 10 Superintendent Deborah Alden said Monday that Santillo was a substitute teacher for 6 1/2 school days, between March 12, 2015, and Nov. 6, 2016.

At the time of his arrest, he was not employed with the school district, according to Alden.
